Dear Publisher
It feels like summer is officially over! I’m heading to Beijing tomorrow, and when I get home, it’ll be Labor Day Weekend, and that’s the unofficial close (and thankfully, the last football-free weekend for a long time). As we head into the fall, there’s some great stuff to come, some of which you can read about in the quick hits at the bottom.
In the meantime, with 2011 around the corner, there’s a great opportunity coming to Abu Dhabi, but that’s of course after the greatest opportunity of them all—Frankfurt! Check below for details on that Abu Dhabi fair, and certainly read out guide to making the most of your CBE participation in Frankfurt.
The other side of the world is calling me, so I must bid you a Happy End Of Summer, and some Happy Reading!

| Opportunity in Abu Dhabi.... |

Some book fairs, like The Frankfurt Book Fair, have reputations that precede them: Frankfurt is widely known as the largest and most important and furthest reaching book fair in the world. Achieving a reputation like that is no small feat, and undoubtedly, the management of the Frankfurt Book Fair know what they’re doing. So it’s no surprise that their venture into the Middle East with the Abu Dhabi Book Fair (now going into its 21st year) attracted over 230 thousand people from 63 countries. If the trends continue, the 21st edition in 2011 should be even bigger—no doubt because of smart planning from management.
Management would appear to have gotten even smarter for 2011 in a new way: Partnering with Combined Book Exhibit and American Collective Stand! Announcing a new joint venture, The Abu Dhabi Book Fair, Combined Book Exhibit and American Collective Stand are proud to tell you about the debut of the International Collective at the 2011 Abu Dhabi Book Fair!
The International Collective is a chance for companies within the publishing industry to have a presence at the book fair with or without attending. Those wishing to attend can choose from multi-booth and/or meter-panel displays, while those wishing to have a presence without attending can choose single title or shelf displays. As an official exhibit of the fair, the International Collective will be in a great location with loads of traffic, and will be heavily advertised both in the lead up to the fair and onsite.
The Arab World presents some of the best opportunities for publishing. The region in general is starved for content and is looking for books not only to translate to Arabic, but also to purchase distribution rights for in their original languages, therefore more than doubling the possibilities. Additionally, with the region’s focus on education, they’re looking to buy in quantity. The International Collective allows you to participate in this, the fastest growing book fair in the Arab World, in an effective and budget friendly manner. As described above, the Frankfurt Book Fair is known as the best and biggest of all the book fairs in the world. While “best” is most certainly an opinion, biggest is hard to debate: with 8 halls, almost all of which are bigger than The London Book Fair, and (literally) a mile from one end to the other, you’d be hard pressed to find a bigger venue on the book fair schedule. There’s no denying that no matter how much opportunity lies in that stretch, there’s also a lot of competition, so I’m here to help you maximize your CBE presence at Frankfurt.
Don’t wait for people to come to your book! Let it be known as much as you can that you have a book in the Combined Book Exhibit, within the American Collective Stand. The booth number is 8.0 5961.
Use your normal resources and then some! Have a Facebook? Tell your “friends” you have a book at Frankfurt! Have a Twitter? Tell your “followers!” To really hit it home, use your PubMatch account! Don’t have a PubMatch account? It’s completely free! And most importantly, you can target who you tell—just search the network for people/companies that will be at Frankfurt and LET THEM KNOW YOU HAVE A BOOK IN THE COMBINED BOOK EXHIBIT AT FRANKFURT!
Add to your exposure! The Frankfurt Book Fair has a number of onsite publications, published by a number of reputable outlets. In fact, Combined Book Exhibit has a deal with Publishers Weekly to get your details in at a discounted rate. Email seth@combinedbook.com to learn more about that opportunity.
Don’t Get Discouraged! Frankfurt Book Fair might be the biggest, but that also means it’s the busiest. Attendees and exhibitors alike run from meeting to meeting, and have immediate concerns, however foot traffic to the Combined Book Exhibit is virtually nonstop, and your contact information (if you’re participating of course) is readily available at the exhibit. So, don’t be surprised if months down the road, you get contacted about Frankfurt business.
