Dear Publisher!

We’ve reached the end of 2007, and have some fun international stuff to report below, including our experience at the first ever New Title Showcase in the Middle East, and a really good free exhibiting opportunity in India, so look out below for that stuff.

As for 2008, there are all sorts of great stuff planned for our 75th year in business!  Be sure to come see us at ALA Midwinter, where we’ll have new books on displayed, and new features for everyone.

Look to see our updated website in coming weeks at www.combinedbook.com, as well as the ever expanding cbedatabase.com and (I promise) new updates from around the country (and the world) at Comblogged Book Exhibit.

So until next time, have happy holidays, a happy New Year, and of course, enjoy some happy reading!

Seth

Recap From Sharjah:

The 2007 edition of the Sharjah World Book Fair, held in the United Arab Emirate of its namesake, took place from December 5-12 with a projected attendance of upwards of 200 thousand, and exhibits from some 700 companies.  One exhibit in particular, however, represented several companies all on its own.

Held in the International Hall of the fair, the now ubiquitous New Title Showcase—a joint effort between the Combined Book Exhibit and Reed Exhibitions—made its Middle East debut to great praise.  With the largest percentage of books being sold at the fair consisting of English-language titles, its no surprise that the New Title Showcase, which exclusively featured English-language books, would be one of the most popular exhibits at a fair that consisted mostly of Arab publishers and booksellers and a small amount of foreign collectives.

It was evident from the beginning of the fair that there is a strong interest in U.S. and U.K. books for sales purposes, and since the fair historically only showed backlist titles from US and U.K publishers, the organizers specifically wanted a New Title Showcase to (not surprisingly) showcase new titles for the attendees’ benefit.  Most visitors to the New Title Showcase wanted to buy the books on the spot, and by the show’s end, every book was sold to bookshop-clients of Ingram International (a New Title Showcase participant there to take orders from attendees, along with Gardners UK).

Unlike many other international book fairs, such as those held in London, Bologna and Frankfurt, the Sharjah World Book Fair was much more of a fair for booksellers, and less for rights purposes.  However, rights and translations are not overlooked in the region as there are several very well funded programs in Abu Dhabi and Dubai (where Abu Dhabi is translating 100 books a year into Arabic, and Dubai is claiming that they want to translate 1000 books a year).  Both are funded by their respective Emirates and are great opportunities for publishers.  The Abu Dhabi program is called Kalima and can be seen at http://kalima.ae/eng.php.  The Dubai group is Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation http://www.mbrfoundation.ae/.  Both will be attending the London Book Fair.

The first-ever Sharjah World Book Fair New Title Showcase was both a success, and a valuable learning experience.  In this new arena for English-language books, there is a lot of competition and an unlimited amount of opportunity that we hope to be a part of for many years to come.

Special Exhibit at the New Delhi World Book Fair

While The Combined Book Exhibit does not exhibit at the New Delhi World Book Fair (though who really knows what the future may bring), we are never opposed to sharing a special opportunity with you all.

In Words and Deeds is the name of a special exhibit to be held at this year’s fair, the theme of which is works by and about Mahatma Gandhi.  There is also a corresponding audio-video exhibit as well.  The exhibit is free to participate in, and is a great opportunity to sell rights for these important books in this region.

For more information on the exhibit, including how to enter, and what would be required to enter, contact Nuzhat Hassan, director of the National Book Trust, India at nbtindia@ndb.vsnl.net.in
