Dear Publisher!

For being the shortest month on the calendar, February sure felt long.  It might have had something to do with attending the American International Toy Fair though.  That’s a long, and big big big show (which you can read about below).

Now that we’ve reached the end of the month, the Spring show season will continue right into March with Public Library, then in April with plenty of state library shows.  And speaking of libraries, we’ve decided to do a little more for libraries as we continue our 75th year anniversary celebration (which you can read about that below).

Of course, while looking ahead, its fun to look back on all that February had to offer.  February’s most Hallmark-friendly day is of course Valentine’s Day—a day for love and friendship.  And speaking of friendship, we’re happy to pass along to you some information from our good friends at Publishers Weekly (which you can read about below).

What’s not below is the Comblogged Book Exhibit, the great books at the CBE Database, and the soon-to-be-launch of the brand new CBE Website.

But what is below for you, hopefully, is some happy reading!

Seth

CBE's Toy Fair Debut:

The 2008 edition of the annual American International Toy Fair took place this past February 17-20, and there was quite a treat waiting at booth 3308 for anyone in attendance that was in the market for books.  The Combined Book Exhibit made our debut at the American International Toy Fair, greeted with compliments and important traffic.

The American International Toy Fair is a show representing the $20 billion youth entertainment market, which of course includes books.  For the Combined Book Exhibit debut, we were located in the “Reading, Writing and Rhythm” area of the show floor—an area exclusively for books and book related material.  The Combined Book Exhibit’s three-booth display was comprised of books and other material representing more than 65 publishers.

As a non-book fair, the American International Toy Fair has a lot of competition that most book fairs don’t have.  Instead of vying for traffic from other publishers, books represented at the Toy Fair have to compete with completely different products.  While this does lead to slower traffic, this also means that the traffic that was received was the right traffic:  those looking for books.  And since the Toy Fair is trade only, this traffic included buyers, licensers, wholesalers and distributors.

The Combined Book Exhibit’s debut at the American International Toy Fair brought quality traffic to all participants.  Leads and links to the official show catalog and report will be emailed to all participants in the coming weeks.

Now we look to you:  after a successful debut, would you participate with the Combined Book Exhibit at the 2009 American International Toy Fair?

CBE Becomes Library Champions:

As part of our 75th year celebration, Combined Book Exhibit has decided to become official ALA Library Champions, as a way to give even more to libraries.  Seventy-five years ago, the original Combined Book Exhibit Book Mobile was created as a way to give librarians better means of making costly acquisition decisions during the Great Depression.  Now, 75 years later, the library market is our biggest venue, and we’re always looking for new ways to contribute.

For Combined Book Exhibit’s participating publishers, this also offers more opportunity.  Library Champions are specially advertised and heavily trafficked exhibitors, which means even more traffic to your titles at the ALA shows.  Being a Library Champion also allows for more advertisement and marketing opportunities, which we will in turn pass onto you.  More details are still in the works, but be on the lookout in the coming weeks for how to take advantage of these new opportunities.

Updates from Publishers Weekly:

Our good friends at Publishers Weekly have a lot of new great programs and important announcements that they would like to share with publishers.  They’ve enlisted the help of the CBE Newsletter to pass the information along.  So, without further adieu…

Publishers Weekly is proud to announce that they have joined forces with Publishing News to exchange UK/US editorial international news, widening the scope of their reach, and in turn, making your publisher’s news more international.  Together, PW and PN are jointly producing the official London Book Fair Show Daily at the 2008 London Book Fair.

The March 10th issue of Publishers Weekly is dedicated to discussing the "Green Movement" in the book publishing community.

Publishers Weekly launches a Digital PW version.

A unique partnership between Publishers Weekly and netGalley will soon make it possible for publishers to submit their advance title information digitally to PW, allowing you to submit your new titles for review quicker, easier, cheaper, and with more lead time.

For more information about these new initiatives, please contact Cevin Bryerman at cbryerman@reedbusiness.com or 646 746 6654
