Dear Publisher!
As promised! Here we are bright and early to give you what we hope is a helpful and useful London Book Fair preview. If you’re attending LBF, we’re hoping our general overview will help you find some great stuff at the fair. If you’re not attending the fair, maybe this will push you closer to RSVPing yes for 2009.
In addition to our general overview of the fair (with input from our ten-year veteran), below you will find detail in this year’s Market Focus on the Arab World, and why it’s so important to pay it attention. Also, since we’re at least a little bit narcissistic, the first official preview of the second annual LBF New Title Showcase.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t work out our guest writer for this time, but maybe I can find some people in London to join me in my blogging. I will be blogging daily (or at least as frequently as possible) from London, so check Comblogged often to get a first-timer’s take on the whole ordeal.
If you find yourself in London during the fair, and you manage to find me there too, be sure to say “hi.” In the meantime, happy travels, and of course: Happy Reading!
Seth

General Highlights: |
| |

This is not a direct quote from writer Samuel Johnson, but I have a feeling that if he were alive today, he might be willing to agree with the edits I’ve made of his original sentiment:
“You find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave [The] London [Book Fair]. No, Sir, when a man is tired of [The] London [Book Fair], he is tired of life; for there is in [The] London [Book Fair] all that life can afford.”
Unfortunately for Mr. Johnson, The London Book Fair was not in existence almost 300 years ago. But if it were, we can be confident that Mr. Johnson, or at least his publishers and/or agent would have been there because LBF (according to their website), “is the global publishing community's leading spring forum for booksellers, publishers, librarians and book production services worldwide.”
A lot of different factors have to play into the event to make a quote like this legitimate. Luckily, the London Book Fair doesn’t disappoint. The 2008 edition of the fair will take place from April 14-16 in Earls Court, London and will include three full days of exhibits, seminars, events, rights deals and more. Our ten-year veteran of the show, Jon Malinowski, helps us find some of the highlights (with some help from the LBF itself).

Market Focus: |
| |
Like many a book fair’s “Country of Honor,” each year’s London Book Fair features programming designed to promote a specific market. This year’s Market Focus (as is the official term) is on the Arab World.
The Arab World, according to the London Book Fair’s definition, is, “defined as the 20 countries and 2 states that have Arabic as their registered official language.” As this year’s Market Focus, there will be programming, network opportunities and more for you to make sales and other business dealings with this growing market. By definition (again, according to the LBF themselves), the Market Focus is “A three day cultural program celebrating the strength and diversity of Arabic literature will be run by The London Book Fair and the British Council working in partnership as part of the Market Focus 2008. It will consist of a series of talks, discussions, debates and workshops aimed at encouraging collaboration between UK and Arab publishers and translators. Current trends in contemporary Arabic literature will be introduced to a UK audience through a showcase of some of the best writers and writing from the Arabic world.”

2nd NTS at LBF: |
| |

Once again, Combined Book Exhibit has partnered with The London Book Fair to provide LBF attendees with the best place to see titles they probably haven’t heard of at The New Title Showcase.
This year’s London Book Fair New Title Showcase has over 400 books from more than 300 publishers. Like last year, the NTS will be located right at the entrance to the Earls Court Convention Center and outside the actual exhibit hall. If you’re attending the fair, you can enjoy the New Title Showcase, even before the exhibit hall opens.
The New Title Showcase is an official exhibit of the London Book Fair, heavily advertised and trafficked during the show. The over 400 books in the exhibit are all new to the London Book Fair, and mostly from small and independent presses. Contact information for all 300+ publishers in the exhibit will be available through the printed exhibit catalog. You can also see each publisher’s contact information, as well all the books that will be in the exhibit, at the virtual New Title Showcase, found at www.newtitleshowcase.com. |
