Dear Publisher

Happy New Year everyone!  As you can see, we’ve revamped the newsletter a bit.  We hope you like the changes.

There are some big things in store for 2009, and we already have two major announcements that you can read about below.  Don’t forget to see all the new stuff we’re adding to CombinedBook.com, and The Book Checkout, or many of the new stuff we’re reporting on over at Comblogged Book Exhibit.

In this uneasy time in the world, it feels like books, and the escape they provide, haven’t been more important in our lifetimes.  The transfer of information and the sharing of ideas can go far to help get us through these tough times too, so if there’s anything you want to pass onto me, or any of your fellow readers, I’d be happy to post it.  You can email me at seth@combinedbook.com.

Until next time, happy reading to all!

Books and Cooks at ALA Annual...

As the world’s largest gathering for library industry professionals, The American Library Association’s Annual conference (taking place this year from July 11-14, in Chicago, IL) is an event that we all look forward to.  It just got a bit more delicious.

Combined Book Exhibit, and our online counterpart The Book Checkout, are proud to be partnering with ALA for the launch of “What’s Cooking @ ALA,” The Cookbook Pavilion at ALA Annual!  This new pavilion will feature an exhibit of cookbooks, food writing, food reference and anything food-related, accompanying live demonstrations from chefs both local to Chicago and from around the country.

Participation in the exhibit is open to any publisher or author with a completed book, magazine, database or other library-oriented material that is related to food, drinks, and culinary arts.  Additionally, every title included in the “What’s Cooking @ ALA” exhibited will have a second representation in The Combined Book Exhibit!  Participation is easy, and a low-cost way to effectively market your food-related materials!  Learn more at www.TheBookCheckout.com/ALACookBookExhibit.
Worldwide Children's Event...

According to its website, The Bologna Children’s Book Fair is a trade-only event with attendance from, “professionals of the trade publishing world - publishers, authors, illustrators, literary agents, translators, TV and Film producers, licensors and licensees, business developers, packagers, printers, distributors, booksellers, librarians, teachers, and providers of publishing services.”  Any trade-only fair with an “in attendance” list like that is a very targeted fair.  Taking into consideration that the fair is exclusively for children’s material makes it a premier venue for marketing your children’s book.

From March 23-26, what seems like the entirety of the children’s publishing community will descend on Bologna, Italy for this annual and unique opportunity to surround themselves with like-minded professionals looking to spread ideas about children’s literature throughout the world.  Companies exhibiting will be seen by thousands of attendees all exclusively in the market for children’s books.

Programming at the fair includes a literary agents center, announcements of the BolognaRagazzi Awards, and Illustrators Exhibit, and a full schedule of entertaining and educational events, among many, many others.  You can learn more about the fair itself here.

The Combined Book Exhibit will be on hand within The American Collective Stand, allowing your titles to be on display without the extra costs of attending yourself.  The deadline to register is coming soonTo begin registering your titles for inclusion in Bologna, simply click here.

New Market in New Delhi...

What do over 1,300 exhibitors, 17 countries, and about 1 million people total have in common?  They were all present at the 2008 New Delhi World Book Fair.  If that doesn’t sound phenomenal, perhaps the announcement that sister companies Combined Book Exhibit and American Collective Stand will be there in 2010 will add some excitement.

Every two years, the National Book Trust, India, hosts the New Delhi World Book Fair, “the biggest book fair in the Afro-Asian region.”  The 2010 event will take place from January 30-February 7th, and will be the 19th time the fair takes place.  The “Honor Country” at the 2010 fair will be Germany.

Like at any international fair, participation in the New Delhi World Book Fair gives you the opportunity to connect with booksellers, librarians, distributors, publishers, agents, authors, and much more.  With a reported 1 million in attendance over the course of the fair, The New Delhi World Book Fair is one of the largest venues to have your titles be seen.  After attending the show as and meeting with its director in 2008, our own Jon Malinowski had this to say: “I think New Delhi is the next logical place to go for English language publishers looking to expand their worldwide reach.” As the number of English speakers in India increases, the market for English-language books does too, along with the ever-present translation market, making The New Delhi World Book Fair the perfect place to expand your horizons.

After conversations with many exhibitors, Jon found that a collective would be well received at the fair, not just by attendees being able to find a large group of English-language publishers together, but also for exhibitors who told him that they “would much prefer to come with a collective because of the problems they encountered with Internet, electricity and ordering furnishings, etc.”

As a result, look for more information in the near future about being a part of the American Collective Stand and Combined Book Exhibit at the 2010 New Delhi World Book Fair!
