Dear Publisher

We’re officially halfway through the summer. I hope your summer reading projects are further along than mine—it’s been a busy season, both with prepping for what’s to come and participating in what’s already past. Read about each below.

Don’t forget to keep your eye on PubMatch for new opportunities, and be sure to check CombinedBook.com for all of our constant updates.

Sorry to be so brief—see you near the fall!

Happy rest of the summer, and Happy Reading!

Show Switch...

Some bad news coming out of the Midwest: Ohio Library Council has, after a few weeks of bad news, unforgiving legislation and polling of their members, decided to cancel their 2009 trade show. While this is sad news for all members of the Ohio library community, as well as exhibitors like us, we are able to salvage some silver lining in light of this.

Our schedules will now allow us to attend the Michigan Library Association annual trade show! Michigan Library Association’s annual show has a lot to offer, particularly for those looking for a suitable venue in the wake of Ohio’s cancellation. The show, which will take place this year from November 3-6 in Lansing offers an average attendance of up to 1100, features hours of exclusive exhibit time each day, and—unlike the Ohio Library Council—hasn’t faced major budget cuts! It also represents a similar geographic region as, and is a comparable, if not improved venue this year for your books than the Ohio Library Council.

All Ohio Library Council participants’ titles will be automatically moved to Michigan Library, along with what we are expecting to be a rush of new participants.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact drop us a line.
Last Chance for ICPE...

Along the lines of the success of ALA Annual, we’re hoping to make the second ever International Children’s Publishing Exhibit a huge success as well! ICPE is an official exhibit of the Beijing International Book Fair, and is a partnership between the BIBF themselves, Combined Book Exhibit, American Collective Stand and the Association of Educational Publishers.

The exhibit itself, which already includes over 130 titles from large and small publishers, will be located in the main hall of the fair, opposite the very large and well trafficked “Country of Honor” exhibit (this year’s Country of Honor is Spain). ICPE will be heavily advertised onsite at the show, and should have even more traffic than it did in 2007. Registration for ICPE is open until August 10th, so be sure to head to www.ICPEOnline.com to register now, and see all of the titles and publishers already registered.
ALA Recap...

Here at Combined Book Exhibit, our fearless leaders have been in the game for a long time. So, when they describe it as “the best Annual I’ve ever been too,” that’s got to mean something, because over the course of the years, each ALA has garnered more and more competition. It probably didn’t hurt that this year’s show took place in Chicago, the previous attendance record holder. Attendance this year topped 28 thousand, and traffic was high right through the very end of the last day of the show (note: starting next year, the trade show is cutting the final day).

Adding to the success of the overall show, and to Combined Book Exhibit’s success, we’re very happy to report that in our first attempt, “What’s Cooking @ ALA”—The American Library Association Cookbook Pavilion was a hugely popular and plans are already in place to make next year’s pavilion bigger and better! With 2-3 cooking demonstrations each of the first three days of the conference, traffic was high at the back of the hall where the pavilion was located. Accompanying the demonstrations were about 250 cooking and food titles on display, and sales from some of the larger participating publishers, all which helped “What’s Cooking @ ALA” contribute to what was one of the best ALA Annual Conferences in many years. To see all of the titles on display, head over to www.thebookcheckout.com/alacookbookexhibit
