Dear Publisher

Who knew that, aside from Thanksgiving and “Black Friday,” November was going to be one busy month?!? With all of our 2009 shows officially in the books less than halfway through, I guess I imagined a bit of a slowdown. Looks like I was wrong.

How was I wrong? Hindsight may be 20/20, but foresight should be 20/10, so we immediately started looking forward to 2010 with 20/10 vision. Below, you can see some of the results, particular at The London Book Fair and ALA Midwinter and PLA. Lastly, you’ll find some quick notes and loose ends, as well as the newly updated 2010 schedule all the way at the bottom.  Clicking the name of the show will bring you to a description and further info.

For constant updates heading into 2010 be sure to keep up with The Book Checkout, CombinedBook.com and PubMatch.com.

One more month to go and the “Best of the Decade” lists should be in full swing. Time flies.

Happy Reading!

Special London Exhibits...

Earlier this year, The London Book Fair featured its third official New Title Showcase in as many years. Though previous years were certainly successful, this year is the year that the New Title Showcase “came into its own” as not only a great find on the show floor, but as a great destination. Traffic was an all time high, inquiries were collected at a greater rate than ever, and the caliber of visitor could not have been higher. Piggybacking on this year’s success, The London Book Fair has opted to add two special sections to the 2010 New Title Showcase to highlight not only those genres, but to make the New Title Showcase an even better destination.

South Africa: The goal of every year’s LBF Market Focus is to strengthen ties with, and educate the publishing community on, the market of the country or region being honored. This year London turns the spotlight on South Africa and the South African market and publishing community. In honor of their participation, the London Book Fair is brightening the spotlight just a little bit by adding a South African section to the New Title Showcase. This new area will feature books from and about South Africa, and it will be located within the New Title Showcase.

Comics and Graphic Novels: The past several years has featured the utter explosion of the comic and graphic novel formats. While naysayers stick by the claim that the current sexiest feature in publishing will be just a passing phase, here we are years later with “Cons” across America growing faster than ever, and no the attention of the London Book Fair. LBF has added a Comic and Graphic Novel pavilion to the show floor, and now to highlight the titles of those publishers that might not be in the pavilion, a Comic and Graphic Novel New Title Showcase has been added. This new showcase will feature comics, graphic novels, Manga and more, and will be located adjacent to the New Title Showcase.

To register for either special area, simply go to the LBF New Title Showcase registration here, and click the appropriate box.

Outstanding Periodical...

For nearly half a century, the American Library Association’s division relating to university libraries and the like—affectionately referred to as the Association of College and Research Libraries—has provided an outlet for its members to gather and share information. With its bi-yearly conference and yearly meet-ups and seminars, ACRL serves its niche quite effectively. But, ACRL has no more prestigious or further-reaching outlet than the 47 year old Choice Magazine.

Choice Magazine, the official publication of the Association of College and Research libraries, publishes twelve issues a year of reviews, essays, spotlight articles and more. Choice has a circulation of more than 30 thousand who rely on its monthly reviews and recommendations. Every year, Choice chooses the winners of its annual, prestigious Outstanding Academic Title Award.

Accounting for only about 10% of the over 7 thousand reviews Choice publishes each year, the extensively reviewed and considered winners are announced officially in the January issue of the publication. However, Combined Book Exhibit is allowed an early look! For over 20 years, CBE and Choice have teamed up to mount an exhibit featuring many of the winners at each year’s American Library Association Midwinter Conference, and the ACRL conference occurring every two years. In 2010, you can see many of the winning Choice Outstanding Academic Titles at both ALA Midwinter and Public Library Association!

Throughout the year, we’ve worked fairly closely with the US Department of Commerce in places like Bologna and Frankfurt, allowing them to use our service to teach people about their service. With their far reach, they are able to offer some services that we might not necessarily be able to, and one of those services is the opportunity to be on display in book fairs at which we don’t have a presence:

Doha Book Fair Catalog Show: The US Embassy is staging a 100 square meter U.S. Pavilion at the 20th Doha International Book Fair, which takes place December 30--January 9. The only cost to U.S. publishers to participate is $100. This is a flat fee for exhibiting up to five titles and a great way to explore opportunities in the Middle East for your titles. To learn more about this event, go to http://www.buyusa.gov/qatar/en/158.html. To register on-line, fill out the registration form at http://www.buyusa.gov/qatar/en/112.doc and send to Dawn.Bruno@mail.doc.gov and Anissa.Lahreche@mail.doc.gov. The deadline to register is Friday, December 4 so sign up today!

Taipei International Book Exhibition:  TIBE is the largest annual trade show for the publishing industry in the region. The show takes place January 27-February 1, 2010, and focuses on promoting titles and digital content, as well as selling publishing and licensing rights. Last year, over 20,000 people visited the U.S. Pavilion at TIBE, resulting in 137 inquiries from foreign publishers and over 100 licenses sold making it one of the best opportunities to locate partners from the Greater China region. TIBE has partially subsidized our Pavilion space, so we can offer this opportunity to publishers at no charge. Publishers can exhibit up to five titles (one copy per title), that are available for publishing in Taiwan. The deadline to register for this event is Wednesday, December 16 and registrations will be received on a first-come, first-serve basis. Space is limited to the first 100 publishers. Our office in Taiwan must receive your titles by December 31. Register online today:
Quick Notes from CBE...
Does it seem that with Thanksgiving behind us, you’re not sure when you’ll get your next feast? Fear not! The American Library Association has opted to bring back “What’s Cooking @ ALA”—the Cookbook Pavilion—to the ALA Annual Conference next June, and with it will come cooking demonstrations and an exhibit full of cookbooks and food writing!

Not too interested in cookbooks? They’ve also added the “PopTop” stage, which will feature authors and discussions on popular topics and genres like mystery, travel and Romance. Accompanying the stage will be a full exhibit featuring books fitting into the three genres.

(More details on both ALA Special Exhibits to come!)

Unfortunately, whether from lack of interest or lack of funding in this troubled world economy, the response to the New Delhi World Book Fair has been low. Because of this, Combined Book Exhibit will be forced to remove the fair from their 2010 schedule.

Just a reminder to take the bad with the good: don’t forget about the Dubai International Children’s Book Fair taking place this coming February. Check out www.PubMatch.com/DICBF to learn more and register, and email me at seth@combinedbook.com to learn about some great discounts!
