Dear Publisher
Sorry for the tardiness on this one: The weather really shut us down for a bit in the northeast. So, rather than waste your time with a long, and albeit pretty witty introduction like I usually provide, I’ll leave you simply with this: Wow February went by quickly!
Continue below for an amazing opportunity in California, a great one in Bologna, and some quick hits.
Happy February/March and Happy Reading!

| Best of Both Worlds.... |

When analyzing the benefits of a trade show on our schedule, there are a few things in particular that really weigh in at high importance to many: quality of attendees, expanse of attendees, and of course number of attendees. Our schedule represents many opportunities that incorporate some of these qualities, but the nature of the library market makes it fairly rare for all of the top important qualities to shine in every event: state shows with high quality and expanse of attendees don’t necessarily have the numbers, while national shows have high numbers and a large expanse of attendees but don’t always have the highest quality attendees (as it’s mostly directors and higher ups who aren’t necessarily the ones putting the book in the hand of the patron). However, with the recent news coming out of California that the state’s library and school library associations will be merging their annual events, you can mark California on your list of an event that checks off all three important qualities.
How does California now fill all three important criteria? As a state show, you’re getting all levels of library staff, from directors and decision makers, to acquisition librarians and committee members, to the actual librarians that are on the floor putting the books into the patron’s hands—all the quality attendees you can ask for. Adding to that, you now have school librarians and decision makers, really growing the expanse of the audience. And, combining the two groups, each of which have in years past averaged at about 1,500 or more in attendance, and that’s near or over 3 thousand attendees in one venue, which accounts for good attendee numbers.
The combining of these two state associations marks a great opportunity for your marketing, and skyrockets California in importance. Other state library associations that have merged in the past (ie Texas) have only grown in size and importance since. Don’t miss this opportunity. Get started with your California registration here.

Here at Combined Book Exhibit, we’re always exploring new avenues to offer more and more great opportunities both for you to get your work out there, and for you to find potential new partners and business. A lot of what trade shows are mix both opportunities: they allow you to display your work (thus “getting it out there”) while at the same time hopefully inspiring those who discover your work to want to work with you more (qualifying as “finding new partners and business”). We’re slowly but surely trying to add opportunities for illustrators (ie with PubMatch), and we’re very excited to have a new opportunity for illustrators at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair!
You probably already know that Bologna is the premier event for children’s books, but if you’ve never been there, you might not know that it’s also an important venue for illustrators to show off their work, and a place where publishers spend a lot of time looking through art portfolios to find artists for their next books, which is why we’re happy to announce our newest feature, the Illustration Exhibit!
In the Illustration Exhibit, you’ll be able to display your art portfolio (with a maximum trim of 9 by 14 inches), take inquiries on your behalf, and most importantly, give you the opportunity to have your art exposed to the perfect audience. Best of all, when registering to be part of the Illustration Exhibit, we’ll wave our 2010 membership fee! Simply use the coupon code “BCBF” when registering.
To register, simply go here to begin, register with one title to Bologna Children’s Book Fair, use “Name-Portfolio” as the book title, and choose one of the “Portfolio” options as the subject category.
