Dear Publisher!
I would like to kick off this very first issue of the CBE Newsletter with a thank you to you the reader. It’s not a thank you for reading this, or a thank you for the business, but a thank you for what you do. It is so rare that anyone would get the opportunity to thank so many at once for something he or she has the honor of taking part in. So, as a lover of literature, I would like to extend the following message to you brave many who dedicate your time to creating something I love: thank you!
And with that, I would like to welcome you to the inaugural issue of Combined Book Exhibit’s official CBE Newsletter. It is in appreciation of what you do that we have launched this as what we hope will be a resource for you. Our goal is to provide you with up to date information on what CBE has to offer, including important dates, as well as offering you chances to expand your knowledge on what is available out there for you as publishers and authors.
We know there is a big world with expansive resources and pitfalls. While we surely can’t steer you away from all of the pitfalls, we’d love to help you find some of the resources. Allow us some of your time as each new issue comes out, and we hope you’ll walk away with something extra that you didn’t know before.
Please take the time to look through what our new Newsletter has to offer. In this first issue you’ll find important Combined Book Exhibit dates, as well as the launch of our ongoing series profiling publisher associations.
It is on that note that I ask you to join us inside to see what we can offer you. We invite you to read, learn, and most importantly, respond. Tell us what you wish to see and we will do our best to deliver.
Welcome to the CBE Newsletter. I hope you like what you see.

Lending a Helping Hand |

The increasing volume of information available in modern times is astounding. The Internet alone can generate answers to almost any question in a matter of seconds. At some point however, this grandeur of information can make the transition from helpful to overwhelming.
Book publishers, like anyone else, are right in the thicket of those overwhelmed. Lucky for them there exists a group of Publisher Associations, ready and willing to help out and offer specifically what publishers are looking for.
In this first installment of our ongoing series of Publisher Association profiles, we offer you a look inside one of the first: The Publishers Association of the West. |
 |
Publishers Association of the West |
| |
1977 was a landmark year: Oakland beat Minnesota in the Super Bowl, Elvis Costello arrived on the scene in time for Elvis Presley to leave it, and “Star Wars” hit theaters to the delight of movie fans everywhere. While the future would show that George Lucas set a precedent in 1977, it would also show that another 1977 establishment would also set a precedent: The Rocky Mountain Book Publishers Association. As one of the first of its kind, the association, renamed The Publishers Association of the West in 2000, would change with the times, battle through the literary worlds toughest years, and emerge as one of the “premier professional development association for independent publishers.”
What makes such a successful publishing association? First and foremost, it’s the members. Don’t be fooled by the name including “of the west,” because as Kalen Landow, executive director says: “our members are all over the Western US and Canada, though we joke and it's becoming true that anyone ‘West of the Hudson’ is one of us.” (Of course, one look at the member list will prove that New England shouldn’t feel left out either, because with members in Connecticut and Vermont, their membership seems to include anyone west of the Atlantic.) Including members from everywhere in the country accounts for volume, and it seems as though there is a high quality of members as well as quantity. There are members representing small presses, larger publishers, designers, binderies, printers and publishing freelancers.
Members of PubWest are open to loads of networking opportunities by simply being members. A member directory is available to make communication easy. PubWest also knows that communication can and should go beyond simple networking opportunities: “The association focuses on education and professional development, outreach and networking, and marketing and sales, geared towards professional publishers and those who serve them.” In order to stand by their focuses, they hold an annual conference, make space available for their members at BookExpo America, give out awards, offer discount opportunities, and have a mentorship program that encourages members to reach out and help other members.
To find out more about Publishers Association of the West, visit their website at www.pubwest.org. Joining before January 31, 2007 gets you extra benefits. Any questions may be directed to Kalen Landow, executive director, at (303) 447-2320 or kalen@pubwest.org. |

New in 2007: CBE Website and Online Searchable Database |
| |
Prior to the New Year, Combined Book Exhibit launched our brand new website. Updated for everyone’s benefit, our new site includes our show schedule and deadlines, information on library marketing, a history of CBE, and our newest feature, online registration. We hope to keep our new website updated and changing to meet everyone’s needs. We are currently working behind the scenes to make what you see even better and more beneficial for you. Don’t forget to visit our website at www.combinedbook.com, and don’t ever hesitate to visit the contacts page and drop us a line if you have any questions about anything. |

Coinciding with the launch of our website was also the launch of our revamped online database. Acting as a veritable bookstore for all of the great titles you see at a Combined Book Exhibit, the database is searchable by title, author, publisher and/or ISBN. It is also possible to search the database by any show that CBE has attended. Books have links for purchase at Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble as well. The database not only benefits us as lovers of literature, offering us another outlet for finding great works, but it benefits you as publishers by offering yet another outlet for marketing and selling—all available free of charge when you participate in one or more shows with Combined Book Exhibit. See it for yourself at www.cbedatabase.com. |
