Dear Publisher!

Wow! What an eventful break it has been since the last newsletter. I’m going to go ahead and call it time well spent. If I may recap for you:

-We’ve had boatloads of books coming in for shows taking place this year. ALA Midwinter’s success seems to have just been the beginning of what’s going to be a fantastic 2007. Now, when I say boatloads of books, obviously I mean that there are literally hundreds, maybe even bordering on thousands of books in our office. However, we’re always hoping that you will keep on sending more, so that every exhibit we do this year will be a runaway hit with the librarians.

-We started a CBE Blog, that’s affectionately been dubbed “The Comblogged Book Exhibit.” It’s wonderful insight into what we (or mostly what I) think about current issues in the book world. Check it out at cbeblog.blogspot.com.

-The most important and exciting thing that occurred between the last issue and now, is that we’ve been recruited to set up a very special children’s exhibit at the Beijing International Book Fair! This is huge news not only for us, but also for all of you publishers of children’s books. See the story below for all the details.

We don’t like to waste time at CBE, and we certainly didn’t since the last issue. In this issue you’ll find the next installment of our ongoing series of Publisher Associations with a profile on PMA. We’re also kicking off our new series called the Publisher Spotlight. In this issue, we’re shining the light on ReadHowYouWant.com, a wonderful resource for both publishers and readers. See one of the links below to learn about a great service AAP is offering in March (as a preview to the full story in the march issue). Of course, below you’ll find an article explaining our new Beijing exhibit that we’re falling over ourselves with excitement for.

Don’t forget to check out our website , database and blog for constant resources of information. Ok! That’s it! I’m done! Scroll down for the good stuff!

Until next time!

CBE’s Publisher Association Profiles is proud to present: PMA

PMA - Helping Each Other To Achieve And Succeed In this day and age, there is a constant battle raging for the attention of consumers. Not only are companies competing for attention, but they’re also competing for sales. Books are experiencing a particularly hard time because they’re battling video games, computers, movies and TV. As lovers of literature, we all appreciate the creative process behind bringing an authors idea to a bound, published book, but how do we compete? Luckily for publishers, there’s the PMA, The Independent Book Publishers Association.

PMA is a publishers association that exists to “provide cooperative marketing programs, education and advocacy within the publishing industry.” Founded in 1983, PMA currently boasts a membership of over four thousand publishers of print, audio and video. Their list of member benefits proves that they also have relationships with wholesalers, booksellers, financial companies, insurance agencies, and much more. Their collection of cohorts provides all of their members with networking opportunities.

Networking opportunities are, of course, one way to market. The more connections one has, the more people one can tell about something, and word of mouth can spread like wildfire—especially when many are in the same field. But where some associations offer similar opportunities in networking, PMA stands by their mission to provide their members more. Their laundry list of marketing programs is available to all members, and it includes exhibiting opportunities, awards, direct mailings and advertising. They have also created their own Publishing University (available online and at Bookexpo 2007) that provides its students with seminars in four major aspects of publishing: Legal, Production, Marketing, and Business Organization.

PMA’s website is easy to use, and well organized, and can serve a resource all on its own, even if you’re not a member. But becoming a member opens you up to even more opportunities. For more information about PMA, visit www.pma-online.org, or reach them by phone or email at 310-372-2732 and info@pma-online.org respectively.

Publisher Spotlight:
Every so often, the CBE Newsletter will find a publisher that is not only doing great things for literature, but great things for publishers as well. This is the first of a new ongoing series.

Imagine a world with print-on-demand capabilities, in any format, in little time. Picture a time when your books can be available for disabled readers in a matter of days. You’ve dreamed of a world in which Braille has been automated and doesn’t take three weeks, but only a day. In this dream you can make out the open market available to you on Amazon, Ebay, Moby, Lightning Source and other places. E-books and audio books and printed books in so many formats you think you could just………

Pinch yourself. You are awake. You didn’t see all of these great things in a dream. No. You saw them at ReadHowYouWant.com, where all your printing and format dreams are a reality.

International Children’s Publishing Exhibit:

International Children’s Publishing ExhibitThe name Beijing conjures up different images for almost anyone who hears it. Undoubtedly the general public will see an image of The Great Wall of China. But for those of us in the publishing industry, for the past few years (and most likely many years to come), Beijing has (and will) conjure up an image of something different, but no less great of a feat: The Beijing International Book Fair.

Considered one of the four most important major book fairs in the world, The Beijing International Book Fair is on the cutting edge of great things for its attendees and publishers. This year, those that are in charge of the fair are creating another of these new and great thing for attendees and publishers alike, and they’ve come to us for help.

Partnering with the Beijing International Book Fair and the Association of Educational Publishers, and in conjunction with The Children’s Book Council and The Publishers Association of the U.K, we at Combined Book Exhibit and American Collective Stand are very proud to be debuting the first annual International Children’s Publishing Exhibit!

This official exhibit of the BIBF will be held in the children’s hall of the fair. It will be truly international in scope, representing hundreds of books from hundreds of children’s publishers from the U.S., the U.K., and countries from around the world.

Much like our New Title Showcase at Bookexpo America and The London Book Fair, the International Children’s Publishing Exhibit (ICPE) will be a great opportunity for publishers who cannot afford the expense of attending the show on their own to participate in a show that had 200 thousand attendees and almost ten thousand copyright deals made in 2006.

To find out more about this great opportunity, and to register to participate, go to the exhibit’s homepage at
www.ICPEOnline.com

Bullet AAP Preview:

They stand for the rights of publishers here and abroad. They fight censorship. They provide their members with useful current information on trade conditions, government activities and policies, legislative proposals, and other matters of special concern. Their acronym also happens to comes before almost any other alphabetically. They’re AAP, The Association of American Publishers, and they exist to help publishers here in the U.S. As you can see, they do a lot of really great things for a lot of really great publishers.

On March 7th, they are doing something great for small publishers: they are hosting their Smaller and Independent Publishers Annual Meeting. It’s taking place in New York City and will be full of great resources specifically for those companies that may need it the most. Click the following link to find out more about the show:
