NYCIP PraiseI’m a bit late on this, but I wanted to throw a bit of a review on here from an event I attended this past weekend. As part of Combined Book Exhibit’s 75th Year Anniversary celebration, we decided to sponsor the 21st Annual Independent and Small Press Book Fair at the New York Center for Independent Publishing. To be honest, I had no idea what to expect when I got there, but my goodness was it awesome. The NYCIP (formerly the Small Press Center) is located in the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen building in midtown Manhattan (only low point of the show: the traffic cause by shoppers on 5th ave). The building (which I had been to before for one of Publishers Weekly’s breakfast panels) is essentially a big library on the ground floor, with about four additional floors of rooms. For this specific event, small presses and independent publishers set up tables in almost every room, with a few leftover for educational sessions and panels. The best part about the show wasn’t even all the great books I saw (and the many I subsequently bought), or even the dichotomy of publishers attending. The best part for me was the huge numbers of people walking in off the streets and taking in the whole fair. While—perhaps selfishly—I was staffing a table to teach publishers about Combined Book Exhibit’s service, the whole of the fair was really consumer driven, and driven so well that I left with a positive outlook on book industry/consumer relations. I met a lot of great people and learned a lot. But most importantly, I gained a great confidence. Go to http://www.nycip.org/bookfair/ to learn about the fair, or just www.nycip.org to learn more about the New York Center for Independent Publishing. Hopefully I’ll see you there next year (or sooner)!! Posted by : Seth | 12/10/2008 02:12 PM Comments Posted by: Robert McCarty | 12/11/2008 04:12 AM Sounds fascinatining and useful.
